Alliance will host its third Brazilian Flag Raising at the CT State Capitol. The
civic ceremony will be at 12 noon in front of the gardens of the Capitol
followed by a luncheon reception in room 310. The Brazilian flag will fly over

the people who have helped us with this major accomplishment; State
Representative, Felipe Reinoso for his initiative in helping us to commemorate
our Independence Day in the U.S.A., jointly with Governor, M. Jodi Rell, and
Mayor of Hartford Eddie Perez who have signed the first State and Municipal
official proclamation of the celebration of Brazil Independence Day in the State
Capitol and City of Hartford respectively. Come & share with us this significant
civic moment of the history of Brazil and our people. All are welcome!

On
January 04, 2004, the Brazilian Alliance in the United States ( a.k.a Aliança
Brasileira nos Estados Unidos or ABE) will officially open its doors for
business. The Brazilian Alliance is a brand new non-profit organization that was
created to improve the quality of life of Brazilians living in the Hartford area.
Although ABE has as its primary goal to serve the Brazilian community, other
groups are equally welcome.
ABE
wants to serve as a model organization for the development of immigrant
communities and to foster the development of community leaders that can assist
others deal with social and cultural differences through participation in
community life.
ABE
plans to provide educational programs, English as a second language courses,
computer classes, after school programs for youth and children, social services
in partnership with other community organizations, job placement, services to
senior citizens and a variety of other services as funding permits.
ABE’s
Executive Director, Abigail R. Amorim is a graduate of the University of
Connecticut Graduate School of Social Work and she is the moving force behind
this effort. Abigail dedicated a large portion of her social work studies to
research and she analyzed the growing number of Brazilians in the Greater
Hartford area and their specific needs as immigrants. She believes that
“community is essential for survival and when a person is treated with respect
and dignity in the community where he/she lives, there is reason to look at this
community with pride and a sense of belonging”. Among her recent social work
experience were the welfare to work research (NASW), UConn Center for
International Social Work Studies, and the Cancer Clinical Research and Domestic
Violence departments at the Hartford Hospital.
ABE’s
entire Board of Directors is composed of bilingual/bi-cultural professionals who
are equally excited and enthusiastic about this new venture. Board chair, Rita
Kornblum, is a Public Health Educator at the City of Hartford Department of
Health and Human Services Department; Vice-chair
